What is Acai and Why is it Good for You?
You probably have seen all the ads or heard all the hype, and are wondering, what is acai, and why is it supposedly so good for you?
Acai (pronounced “ah-sigh-ee”) is a small little berry (that resembles a blueberry, only darker) and is found only in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil. Although it has grown there for thousands of years, it has only recently been “discovered” by the health industry of the western world. And ever since then, it has taken the health industry by storm.
That is because acai berry research has exposed some very surprising berry information. This information indicates that the acai berry just might be one of the healthiest foods on the planet. It has been called a wonder fruit and a super food; which are titles only given to select foods. However, it’s important to remember that research is still determining exactly what is acai and its benefits; and any acai berry benefits that products claim to be fact have yet to be proven
However, initial research is undeniably exciting.
Here are a few facts that have been determined about this potent little fruit: - The acai berry contains a high concentration of antioxidants (twice that of blueberries), omega fatty acids, amino acids, fiber (up to 40%), and nutrients.
- It contains 10-30 times the anthocyanin found in red wine, which is the ingredient in red wine that is believed to counterbalance high cholesterol and fatty foods.
- The berry’s fatty acids closely resemble olive oil, which is believed to be an important cause of healthy hearts and low cholesterol in many European populations.
These facts hint at some incredibly exciting acai benefits that may or may not be true. Again, what is acai berry fact and what is hope are two different things. The acia berry is so “new” (to us in the western world, anyway) that it’s too early to tell for sure whether these theories are true. However, the implications are very exciting!
Some people believe that, because of the berry’s overwhelming antioxidant powers, the berry could potentially help fight things such as aging and disease. Some believe that, because of its high fiber and fatty acids, the acai berry can help with weightloss. Some hope to prove that the high nutrients can help with improved skin, increased energy, and better sleep.
Of course, with any new exciting food or medical discovery, there are plenty of berry products to come along with it. The health community has exploded with acai supplements, acai pulp juices, and acai powder products. Since the industry is not yet regulated, it’s important for the consumer to research your options carefully to make sure you are getting high quality, true acai products.
So, as you can see, there are high hopes for this little fruit and the potential magic it holds. What is acai’s impact on the health industry remains to be seen. But one thing can’t be denied; whether it proves to be a miracle food or not, at least it is a very healthy fruit that knows how to get attention!
