The Benefits of Acai: Too Good to be True?

If you’ve heard about the acai berry, then you’ve heard about the benefits of acai. But there are so many incredible claims about acai benefits that it is natural to wonder: is the acai berry too good to be true?

Acai research has shown some truly remarkable acai fruit nutrition facts. The acai berry truly is one of the most nutritious foods on the planet. It has at least twice as many antioxidants as the blueberry, which is known to be one of the most antioxidant of all fruits and vegetables. It is extremely high in fiber, complex carbohydrates, Omega 3,6, and 9, amino acids, and nutrients. This has led many to bestow the title of “superfood” to the acai berry.

This acai berry information, understandably, has the entire health and science industry all abuzz. While acai research has yet to prove anything, the implications of this information are huge. It is only logical to assume that, based upon the information we do know, there could be many health benefits of acai.

Many people believe that just some of the benefits of acai might include:

  • Acai weight loss
  • Increased energy
  • Lower cholesterol
  • Anti-aging properties
  • The ability to fight disease, including cancer and heart disease
  • Better sleep
  • ....and even an improved sex life!

Now, this is where the confusion comes in. Some people say this is true, others say it’s all hype just to sell acai berry products such as acai fruit juice and acai supplements. So what is the truth?

Here’s the answer: we don’t know. The truth is, the acai berry is too “new” to have done enough research yet that is needed to confirm any of these benefits of acai to be true.

However, many of these claims are a result of what we call “deductive reasoning.” This means that we take what we do know to be fact (that the acai berry is chock full of antioxidants, fatty acids, fiber, and nutrients) and apply it to other things we know.

For example, we know that fiber is an important ingredient in losing weight, because it makes us feel full and also reduces insulin spikes that make us feel hungry and crave bad foods. Therefore, since we know that the acai berry contains a lot of fiber, it is natural to deduce that it helps us lose weight.

In the same way, we know that fiber and antioxidants are vital in fighting disease, because they help fight free radicals and detox / cleanse our body of toxins. Since the acai berry is one of the most antioxidant foods on earth, it’s logical to assume that it might help keep a healthier, cancer-free body.

However, none of this has been proven to be true. So it’s best to take this approach; consume acai every day with the knowledge that it is a healthy fruit and a good addition to your overall wellness plan. Don’t take it with hopes of miracles cures or weight loss.

And if, in a few years, they prove the health benefits of acai to be true, then you’re already in the game and enjoying a healthy life!
