What is acai, and what are the benefits of acai juice?
The acai berry (pronounced “ah-sigh-ee”) is a berry that has taken the health industry by storm. You no doubt have either heard about it or at least have seen it mentioned in health stores or on the web. But exactly what is acai, and why all the fuss?
The acai berry is a small little fruit that resembles a blueberry, but is a bit darker and more purple. It only grows in one place in the world - in the Amazon rain forest of Brazil. Although it has been growing in the Amazon for thousands of years, it only recently has made its debut in the western world and, more importantly, the health industry as a whole.
The reason for all the fuss is based upon initial acai berry research, the potential benefits of acai juice are astounding. We say “potential” because the acai berry is so new that research is still being completed, and therefore none of the benefits have been proved. But based upon the acai berry information that we do know, there is good reason to be excited.
The most exciting part of the acai berry is the fact that it has more antioxidants than just about any food on the planet; twice that of blueberries, and nearly thirty times that of red wine. It also is packed with fiber, essential fatty acids (Omega 3,6 and 9), amino acids, beta-sitosterol (a phytonutrient important in lowering cholesterol), and many vitamins and minerals. And it is so potent that you need just a small dose each day to enjoy the benefits of acai juice.
So what does this mean? Again, research is still being conducted and so the benefits of acai juice have yet to be proven. Some people believe that the acai berry can help lower cholesterol, reduce chances of heart disease and cancers, and fight the signs of aging. Many products promote acai weight loss and detox, claiming that many people have lost weight after starting an acai diet.
Of course, there are a lot of different acai berry products available on the market today; including acai berry supplements, extracts, powders, and a variety of types of acai fruit juice.
There are different arguments as to whether the benefits are better or more prevalent than if you take acai supplements or powder. Many people believe that juice can be absorbed more easily and more thoroughly by the body than a powder or supplement. They also point out that it’s easier to tell exactly what you are getting when you buy an acai juice product. Plus, two of the most well-known acai companies, Mona Vie and Sambazon, offer their products in juice form; so it seems juice is a good way to go.
With supplements, on the other hand, you just don’t know what you’re getting. There could be all kinds of other “filler” ingredients that you don’t know about. Some “acai supplements” have been discovered to only have 1% of acai in them!
