The Benefits of Acai Berry

It’s impossible to talk about acai without talking about the benefits of acai berry.  After all, they are one and the same; the yin and yang of the nutrition world.

It’s not like talking about...chicken. When you talk about chicken, you’re talking about the taste (or ways to make it tastier). Although it’s healthy and there are benefits to eating chicken, that’s not the focus.

With the acai berry, however, the entire focus is on what this powerful little fruit has to offer us in terms of health. Not that it doesn’t taste good; the most common analogy is that it tastes a bit like red wine mixed with chocolate. But that’s not the purpose of the acai berry.

The purpose of the acai berry is that it offers us some of the most powerful nutrients and antioxidants in the highest concentration found in just about any natural food on the planet. It contains twice as many antioxidants as blueberries (and thirty times that of wine). It is packed full of fiber, Omega acids, amino acids, vitamins, and nutrients. And with all of this fascinating berry information, one can only assume that there are fascinating benefits of acai berry as well.

Since the acai berry is a relatively new “discovery” (it’s been growing in the Amazon for thousands of years, but until recently the Amazon kept it a secret from us), there is still plenty of acai berry research that has to be done. The potential benefits of acai berry have not yet been proven; but it’s easy to assume that certain benefits are a given, based upon what we do know.

For example, we know that fiber is a great aid in losing weight, because it helps us to feel more full and keeps us from having a sugar crash (which is when we tend to crave bad foods). Therefore, it’s easy to assume that an acai diet could help some people to lose weight.

Likewise, we know that beta-sitosterol (a phytonutrient, or plant sterol) is detrimental in lowering cholesterol, and has even been believed to help treat enlarged prostate. And since we know that the acai berry has a high concentration of beta-sitosterol, it’s easy to assume that consuming acai fruit juice or other acai berry products on a daily basis just might help lower your cholesterol.

And, of course, in recent years we’ve learned about the importance of antioxidants in fighting free radicals and cleansing our body of toxins. Antioxidants could prove to be important in fighting diseases and even the signs of aging. Since the acai berry ranks as one of the most antioxidant foods in existence, it makes sense to assume that acai can help detox the body and help maintain your health.

Of course, none of this has been proven, and until it is, we just have to accept that the acai berry is at least a very nutritious food. So when you see all the ads screaming about acai weight loss and how acai can just melt the pounds away, or how it can lower your cholesterol or fight diseases, remember that, for now, these benefits of acai berry are just theories. That is...for now.
