What is Acai Pulp is it Different than Acai Juice?

If you've done any berry research, you might be wondering what acai pulp is and how it is different than other berry products.

As you probably already know, this berry is only grown in the Amazon rainforest, mainly in Brazil. It is similar to a blueberry but the majority of the fruit is a seed; the surrounding “flesh” is where the true nutrients of the fruit are.

The berry is extremely perishable and only lasts for about 24 hours after the time it is harvested. That means that unless you live in or are visiting Brazil, you are not likely to ever see an actual ripe berry. It also means that transporting the fruit itself to the rest of the world is nearly impossible. Therefore, the berry needs to be first turned into any number of acai berry products that will retain the intense nutrients while also transporting well.

Here are the most common ways that the rest of the world is able to consume this product:

But by far the most popular way to get your daily intake is in acai juice form. Usually, the words “acai juice” and “acai pulp” mean the same thing. They are used interchangeably because pure berry juice is made of the pulp, or the flesh, of the berry; and this results in a very thick, pulp-y juice. Pure acai juice will not be watery like other juice; the pulp makes it thicker and that is why it is also referred to as acai pulp. Sometimes, the term “pulp” means the fruit itself frozen; and then packaged into sealed packets to be mixed into a healthy smoothie.

Since this industry is relatively new, it is also (so far) unregulated. That means that there are plenty of scammers out there selling fake products just to make money. Many companies use different processes that rob the product of the true nutritional value and zap out the nutrients.  This means that not only are you not getting what you paid for, but also are not benefitting from the nutrients of acai.

The most important step when buying your acai product is to ensure it has a high ORAC score. ORAC stands for “Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity,” and this rating basically determines the amount of antioxidants in that food or product.

People should consume at least 3000 ORAC units a day; but most consume less than 1,000. Since pure acai berry has an ORAC rating of around 3,000 - 5,500, then pure acai pulp product should help you reach your daily recommended ORAC requirement.

Also, make sure that your acai pulp juice contains mostly acai; no added sugars, preservatives, or other unnecessary products. This will help ensure that you are getting a true product and will be experiencing the benefits of healthy acai in no time at all.
