Is Acai Powder the Most Effective Form of Acai?

You already know the potential health benefits of acai; now you're curious if acai powder is any more effective than the juice.

The acai berry is only found in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil.  It is also extremely perishable, and is only good for about 24 hours after it is picked.  Therefore, unless you are visiting a local acai berry farm in Brazil, you most likely will never see the fruit in berry form.  It must be transformed into other products that have a long enough shelf life to be transported across the globe. 

There are a number of forms in which you can buy acai berry products:

There are a lot of arguments whether acai (or any dietary supplement, for that matter) is most effective as a juice or as a powder. 

Some people say juice is more quickly and thoroughly absorbed by the body.  Others say that powder is.  They point out that acai fruit juice is high in sugar, and the powder saves on calories. 

Others insist that the form you take acai is not as important as the fact that you do take it every day.  And for many people, acai powder is simply more convenient than juice.  It doesn't have to be refrigerated and therefore can be taken “on the go.”  It also packs well and can be taken on the road if you travel a lot for your job.  Powder usually comes in powder packets, to be mixed as an acai smoothie or with other fruit juices.

The only area of concern is making sure that you are getting the purest form of powder available.  True acai powder must be freeze-dried acai, as this is the only process that retains all the nutrients of the original acai berry.  It is also important to make sure that the product is made mostly of acai.


Since there is not yet any regulation on the acai industry, a product can make a powder with only 1% acai and label it as an acai product. This is not only a waste of money but also can be dangerous, since you have no idea what the other 99% is made of.

Therefore, it is wise to ignore all those flashing banner ads that promise you the world, and stick with  reputable acai products.

Until further research proves otherwise, you are most likely to benefit equally from either acai fruit juice or powder.   The true question is what product form fits in most with your lifestyle to ensure that you consume this nutritious berry every day.
