Acai Berry Plant Why Grow Your Own?
If you already know about acai, you might be wondering if you can grow an acai berry plant.
You more than likely have heard of acai, and already know about the possible health benefits of acai berry. While nothing is yet proven (the acai berry is relatively “new” to the western world so a lot of berry research still has to be done), what is known is that the acai berry holds a lot of nutrients, fiber, and antioxidants. Therefore, many people believe that the benefits of acai might include everything from lower cholesterol and better skin to acai berry weight loss and lower chance of disease.
The acai berry only grows in the rainforest of South America, and it is extremely perishable; it only lasts for about 24 hours after being harvested. That means that unless you live on the edge of the Brazilian rainforest, you most likely will only see acai in the form of one of the many acai products.
A true acai product uses processes that retain all the nutrients of the acai berry, while breaking it down into a form that can be transported across the world. The most popular acai products include acai supplements, acai powder, and acai fruit juice. It has become a staple in the popular diet trends, and so in some places you can even find an acai diet smoothie, acai sorbets, and acai energy drinks.
However, while there are many reputable, high quality acai products on the market, there are just as many scammers too. It is difficult to know who to trust and who just wants your money.
These facts, in addition to the fact that acai can be very expensive, make many people wonder if they can grow their own acai berry plant. After all, you would not only save money, but you’d be getting your own organic acai in its truest, healthiest form, without any added chemicals or unknown ingredients.
Wouldn’t it be easier, healthier, and cheaper to just grow your own acai berries?
Well, yes, it would....if you could. Unfortunately, the acai berry plant is actually a palm tree, and a very large and finicky one at that. There is a reason that the acai palm only grows in one part of the world. Actually, a few reasons.
The acai palm needs the very humid, very warm climate found only in the Amazon rainforest. It needs specific nutrients in the soil, and it also needs a lot of room!
Even if you could replicate the tropical climate in a greenhouse, the palm grows up to 90 feet tall, with leaves that can grow up to 9 feet in length. Given the size of the greenhouse you’d need to grow even one palm, it might be cheaper to just buy your acai products every month!
Unfortunately, acai berry scams are not restricted to just supplements and juice. There are plenty of scammers who try to sell you your own acai berry plant, insisting that it’s no more difficult to grow an acai palm than a typical house plant. Just like all the other scammers on the market, they are lying to you in order to make money.
So, for now, it’s best (and easiest) to let the rainforest do the growing, and not attempt to grow your own acai berry plant.
